Flying with a mobility scooter

A plain-English guide to taking your scooter on a plane — what the rules actually are, what to do before you fly, and how the airlines differ. It nearly always comes down to the battery.

The short version: you can almost always fly with a mobility scooter, and by law the airline carries it free. What decides whether your scooter can go in the cabin is its battery. You ride it to the plane door, the scooter travels in the hold, and if it has a removable lithium battery within the limits, the battery comes into the cabin with you. Tell your airline at least 48 hours ahead — they approve your exact scooter. This is guidance, not a guarantee.

The three steps for (almost) every scooter

It's all about the battery

Lead-acid batteries (the heavy batteries in most larger pavement and road scooters) can't be carried in the cabin. Sealed "non-spillable" gel/AGM types can usually stay fitted to the scooter in the hold; older "spillable" wet batteries often have to be removed and specially packed.

Lithium batteries (the light batteries in folding travel scooters) are the ones with size limits — but here's the point that trips people up:

The strict 160Wh limit you may have read about is for laptops and cameras — not mobility scooters. A scooter's lithium battery is allowed up to 300Wh if it's removable (or two batteries of 160Wh each), and there's no size limit at all if it stays fitted inside the scooter and travels in the hold.

Work out your battery's size

Volts × Amp-hours = Watt-hours (Wh). A 24V 10Ah battery = 240Wh (fine to carry in the cabin). A 24V 20Ah battery = 480Wh (over the limit — it stays fitted in the hold). If the label shows mAh, divide by 1,000 first.

What to do before you fly

  • Tell the airline early — at least 48 hours before departure. This is your legal right to assistance and lets them approve your exact scooter.
  • Give them the details: make, model, weight, folded size, and — crucially — the battery type and its watt-hours (from the label or manual).
  • Book "special assistance" at the same time. It's free and covers help through the airport, boarding and landing.
  • Bring the scooter's manual to help staff confirm the battery quickly.
  • Consider insurance — compensation for a damaged mobility aid can be capped around £1,300, which won't replace a premium scooter.
