The Motability Scheme

The Motability Scheme is a government initiative that allows disabled individuals to lease a Car, Mobility Scooter or Powered Wheelchair using their mobility allowance. It provides a way for people with disabilities to access affordable and reliable mobility solutions. The scheme is operated by Motability Operations Ltd, a private, not-for-profit company.

In a nutshell, you simply exchange all or part of your benefit allowance to lease a vehicle of your choice. After three years, either hand back your car, or if you’d like to stay on the Motability Scheme, you can choose to lease a new vehicle for another three years.

Here are some key points about the Motability Scheme:

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Motability Scheme, individuals must receive one of the following mobility allowances:

  1. Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  2. Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  3. War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  4. Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  5. Higher rate of the mobility component of Child Disability Payment (CDP) or
  6. Enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
Lease Options

Through the scheme, eligible individuals can lease a vehicle or mobility product for a period of three years. The lease cost includes insurance, maintenance, breakdown assistance, and vehicle tax. Prices are negotiated by Motability with Car Manufacturers every three months. For the latest prices click here.

Product Range

The Motability Scheme offers a wide range of vehicles, including cars, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs), and Mobility Scooters or Powered Wheelchairs. The available options cater to different mobility needs and preferences.

Dealerships

The scheme works with a network of authorized dealerships across the UK. Customers can choose a vehicle or product from one of the approved dealers and arrange the lease through the Motability Scheme.

Financial Assistance

In some cases, individuals may be eligible for financial assistance to cover the upfront costs of the lease or adaptations to the vehicle or product. This assistance can be discussed and arranged through the Motability Scheme.
